Cooking time - Barley & Fu Chok

March 3, 2008 at 3:11 pm | In Cooking, PhOtos, YumMy FoOd |

Last saturday, after my driving lesson. Went to NTUC to buy the necessary ingredients to make the ‘barley drink’ and ‘Fu Chok’. Dear kept OT, so i tot of preparing the barley drink for him. Whereas for the “Fu Chok”, this is kinda a last minute decision. Heez..

Raw barley imported from holland (if i’m not wrong)

This is the beancurd skin. Its very hard and crispy when i bought back, have to soak till it soft first. The color will slowly change from dark brown to this milky color

Actually i couldn’t find the canned gingko nuts.. saw those in a packet still with shells..
lucky managed to find it, or else i wouldn’t know how to open the shells..

Rock sugar… this is also very important!!!

So after all the preparation of the ingredients.. finally can start to cook the ‘fu chok’

pandan-leaves.JPG

1L of water, 125g of rock sugar, 30 gingko nuts, 180g of beancurd skins… all mixed together to boil and simmer
till the beancurd skin break and turn soft or to boil for another 1.5hrs… (pandan leave wasn’t in the recepi, but i tot
puting a few pandan leaves may smell nice) :-)

Because my pot wasn;t that big, so when it boils, the liquid will flow out.. (argh.. wasn’t in time to lower the fire),
ended up, the fire went off, luckily i notice it and quickly off the gas and restart it again… Phew..

Just need to on to very small fire to let it simmer… Then off the fire and add the eggs..

Nice ‘Fu Chok’ ready to serve… Can serve it cold or warm..
Personally, i prepare eating it warm.. :-P

Next, i used an even smaller pot to cook the barley drink…
Thi is much more easier, barley and water and pandan leave…

 Boil…. boil… boil…..

But i thinnk there was a mis-estimation of either the amount of barley or not the amout of rock sugar.
Coz the drink turn out to be kind of thick and it is too sweet for bryan…

Nevertheless, he love the ‘fu chok’!! ANd was really shock that i would (could) make that. HAha…

Haha.. 2 more recipes to be included in my list of cooking recipe..

My next attempt would be the bacon and asparagus roll… Yummy!!!
